Machiko Hasegawa (the manga artist behind Sazae-san, one of Japan’s most beloved postwar comics) wrote about this — a chicken that adored her suddenly attacked her one day. Turns out she was wearing her sister’s work trousers, and the sister had been mean to the chicken. She switched back to her own pair and the chicken immediately warmed up again. Non-human animals have fixed markings their whole lives, so they’re probably better at reading patterns than we are.
