GOOOOO!!!: A Hundred Penguins Answer the Call

An aquarium in Niigata filmed its penguins charging for the water and captioned it with one very long shout.

GOOOOO!!!: A Hundred Penguins Answer the Call

What's going on

Umigatari is a city-run aquarium in Joetsu, a town on the Sea of Japan coast in Niigata Prefecture. Its signature residents are Magellanic penguins, and there are a lot of them — over a hundred, the largest group of that species kept anywhere in the country. Moving that many birds from one area to another is a routine part of the day, and the birds do it at whatever pace they feel like.

The clip in question is one of those moves. The aquarium posted it from its own account with a caption that isn't really a sentence — just a single word, held and stretched across some forty characters, roughly the effect of yelling GOOOOO until you run out of air. What follows is a walkway full of penguins coming straight at the camera. Some sprint. One trips. One reaches the edge of the water, appears to reconsider the entire plan, and stops.

The reactions run about as you'd expect, with one recurring theme: a surprising number of people watched this and immediately wanted to lie down in the middle of it.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The original caption is one word — ike, “go” — stretched across about forty characters. Japanese holds a consonant by repeating a small ッ, so the shout catches in the throat several times over before it finally breaks loose into a long vowel and a wall of exclamation marks. It reads less like a word than like someone losing their voice in real time.

Umigatari keeps more Magellanic penguins than anywhere else in Japan‼️ Over 100 of them. Around 10:00 you can watch feeding time in the 2F area 🐟 Also worth watching: our keepers telling individual birds apart on sight, just from the colour of the band on the flipper!
Okay this is just purely cute…。。。 Maybe I’ll take the kids to an aquarium this weekend.

Nagashi penguin is a riff on nagashi sōmen, a summer thing where thin noodles are sent sliding down a split bamboo flume and you catch them with chopsticks as they go by. The joke is that the penguins are being served the same way.

the movement is so good it makes me want to be let in! everyone dashing is so cute 🐧✨

it really was a GOOOO situation 😍
read the caption and thought it was Let’s & Go for a second (a 90s manga and anime about kids racing motorised mini 4WD cars, remembered mostly for how much everyone screams at them)
too peaceful, it’s warming my heart 🥰
the person running the account and the penguins are both going way too hard, I cracked up
it’s the Lucky Man race 🤣🤣 (every January 10th at Nishinomiya Shrine, the gates open at dawn and men sprint several hundred metres to the main hall; the first three to arrive are named that year’s lucky men)
just like the lucky man race at Nishinomiya lol
love the one that follows the crowd on pure momentum and then comes to its senses right at the water and stops
it’s only GOOOOO!!! at the very start, and then it slowly turns into “…eh, slow is fine too” — I love that so much
they sprint the whole way and then wait their turn to get in the water, so well-mannered and cute 🐧
what’s the deal with the 🐧 that doesn’t go splash?? 😅
the one weirdly bringing up the rear, just blinking around
the penguin that trips right up front is too precious
AAAA!!! I want to lie flat on the ground and get trampled—-!!!!
I want to be in there with them…… I want to be run over…
use me as a stepping stone and go on ahead‼️🤩👍🐧🎵 (a stock line from the kind of manga scene where someone stays behind so the others can escape)

My take

An avalanche of cute, or a tidal wave — either way, there is nothing to do but be swallowed.
