What's going on
Manami, a 25-year-old woman from Tokyo, was born with almost no hearing. Despite that, her biggest passion in life is stand-up comedy — specifically manzai, the classic Japanese two-person comedy format where a straight man and a funny man trade rapid-fire wordplay. She goes to live shows nearly every week, relying on lip-reading to follow along. For most acts, she manages surprisingly well.
Her favorite duo is a newer act called 9-bancho Retro *(9番街レトロ, a Yoshimoto comedy duo known for their offbeat style)*. The problem: the boke — the "funny man" of the pair, Kyokoku — speaks in a distinctive low, mumbling tone with minimal mouth movement. For someone who depends on lips to decode words, he's a nightmare. Manami's friend Yuzu, also nearly deaf and also a comedy fan, agrees. So Manami submitted a request to *Detective! Knight Scoop*, a long-running Osaka variety show where a rotating cast of "detectives" help ordinary people solve curious problems in their lives.
The detective assigned to her case was Maeda Ken *(眞栄田賢, a comedian and regular cast member of the show)*. The solution they landed on wasn't to ask Kyokoku to change his style — Manami was clear that doing so would ruin what makes 9-bancho Retro special. Instead, they arranged a private performance at a real comedy theater, with Manami and Yuzu standing close enough to the microphone stand to read every lip movement. The duo even prepared a brand-new set just for the occasion.
