Anyone who tends balcony plants knows the anxiety of leaving home for more than a couple of days — especially during Japan's hot, humid summers when a pot can dry out within 24 hours. Automatic watering gadgets exist, but they cost money and require setup. One person decided to skip all that and just apply a little middle-school science instead.

Before heading out for several days, they rigged up a "capillary action watering system" — a bucket of water with strips of old towel draped into each pot, letting capillary action slowly wick moisture into the soil on demand. When they came back, the plants had not merely survived. They had absolutely exploded with growth. Good question — I live high enough up that bugs aren’t really an issue so I haven’t done much, but peppermint oil and similar repellents might work well. Rigging up mesh sounds like a lot of effort.

Also my balcony got pretty messy from all the fussing around while setting this up — a little embarrassing tbh. Will clean it after the rainy season. (The rainy season in Japan, called tsuyu, typically runs through June and July, bringing weeks of humid, overcast weather.)

What a great idea 👏 I’d been buying dedicated watering gadgets, but this is so much simpler ✨ I’ll be away for about a week during Obon too, so I want to give this a try! (Obon is a mid-August Buddhist holiday in Japan when many people return to their hometowns for several days.) Though in peak summer heat, I wonder if it’d even last 2 days 💦

Of course, this was always an option… I’d been doing the whole “poke a tiny hole in a plastic bottle cap and stick it in the soil” thing but it never lasted long enough. This helps.

Years back when I was going abroad, I could find a cat sitter no problem but had no idea what to do with the balcony plants — googled it and this exact method came up. Made one with a bucket and an old bath towel cut into strips. The basil exploded. The cherry tomatoes were looking a bit rough when I got back but bounced right back after a good watering 🍅
