A Japanese machinery maker shows an excavator sliding into a container with inches to spare, and the internet decides the operator must be shipping too.

An Excavator Fits Its Shipping Container Perfectly. So How Does the Driver Get Out?

What's going on

Kobelco Construction Machinery, a Japanese maker of excavators and cranes, posted a short video of one of its excavators being driven into a shipping container for export. The machine slides in with only a sliver of space on either side, the kind of clearance that makes you hold your breath while watching.

The last time the company shared a video like this, viewers kept asking the same thing: if the machine fills the container wall to wall, how does the operator get out? This time the company posted the answer alongside the video. Many excavator cabs have a front window that lifts up and out of the way, and that is the exit.

That didn't stop commenters from settling on their own theory first: the operator simply ships along with the machine.

/ Here’s what loading for shipment looks like 🚢 \ The moment it slots snugly into the container is satisfying every single time…! ✨

If there’s a construction machine video you’d like to see, drop a request in the comments 💭

Last time a lot of you asked “How does the operator get out?” We’ve put the answer in the replies 👇

Heavy machinery in a box~~~(////) The way it fits perfectly is so cool.
Do shipping containers have a fixed international standard size? Did they design it around that?
That’s TOO perfect……! Is it designed to fit for export……?
Does the driver just get exported along with it ()
Operator included
Construction machinery…… now with staff included!
Well, somebody has to drive it out at the other end.
A skilled operator is valuable, so they fly out with it and you get to use them together with the machine. Nice, right? Surpriiise
There is no “person” on board. Come on, repeat after me. There is no “person” on board.

The driver? Wasn’t he shipped out with it?

“Too bad. It was a trick.”

Huh? Where’s the operator? “Something about getting shipped out? Setting sail? Apparently!”
“Reassigned” → “set sail.” 出向 (shukkō, being posted to another company or site) and 出航 (shukkō, a ship setting sail) sound exactly the same, so the coworker can’t tell whether the operator got reassigned or literally sailed off inside the container.
They’ll get carried out at the destination. A few months in that tiny cab… yeah
Ready to use straight out of the box!!
The worst is when you get all the way to the back and realize you forgot your passport
Fun fact: a yunbo’s front windshield actually opens!!! You can get out the front!!! (Yunbo is the everyday Japanese word for a hydraulic excavator, borrowed from an old French brand name.)
On this one, both the front and rear cab windows open. A slim person can go out the back window, an average-size person goes out the front and makes their way over the top of the machine and down. A big person probably just ships with it? lol
@kobelcokenkiOfficial
Once it’s inside the container, the operator opens the front windshield and gets out through there ✨
Oh, so that’s the way out
So they can get out Well, of course they can
This is a win for design and manufacturing precision! They set the dimensions with the container’s internal size in mind (including unit-to-unit variation, dents and so on) and built it to a fixed tolerance. They’ve probably also worked out where to wedge in supports during transport. Keeping shipping costs down like this so the product can compete worldwide is great.
Love that he properly takes his shoes off before walking across the top of the machine ^^ (Taking shoes off before stepping onto a clean surface is second nature in Japan.)
Taking the shoes off properly is such a Japanese touch. And I guess it goes in front-first because getting into the container is the harder part 😊️

Thanks for the comment 😊 And thank you for noticing such small details! Maybe it’s because the job means handling important machinery that little habits like this just come naturally ✨
I’d love to see a video of the “pro” driver who gets it back out at the destination too 🍀

My take

Building a machine to fit the box exactly is impressive. Driving it in exactly is impressive too. That's several different kinds of craftsmanship packed into one container. And whoever has to back it out at the other end must be under a truly ridiculous amount of pressure.
