What's going on
Chubu Centrair International Airport, the main international gateway for the Nagoya area in central Japan, has ninja figures posed around its terminal. One traveler shared photos of them with a slightly cynical caption: the airport's signature ninja, born of the easy assumption that foreigners will be happy as long as you put something like this out.
Ninja are a go-to symbol whenever Japan markets itself to visitors, and this part of the country has some claim to them: Iga, one of the historic homes of ninja clans, is in neighboring Mie Prefecture. Commenters went back and forth on whether that's the connection, or whether the figures are promotion for the 2026 Asian Games hosted by Aichi and Nagoya.
What almost nobody did was agree that it's a cheap gimmick. Most of the replies were Japanese people quietly confessing that the ninja get them too.

The “nin” in ninja (忍) comes from shinobu, “to move unseen.” The original says these ninja can’t even shinobu, so the joke is basically a ninja who can’t ninja.
