It Looks Like a Photo of an Ordinary Japanese Street. It Is Minecraft.

What's going on

The image is about as unremarkable as a Japanese street scene gets: a mid-rise apartment block in a dull brown, a grey overcast sky, a pedestrian overpass crossing the road in the foreground. Nothing about it asks for attention. It was posted with a single line of text underneath, in the register Japanese uses for small print — an asterisk and a correction. It is Minecraft.

Two things seem to be doing the heavy lifting. The first is the lighting: shader mods produce skies and haze that photographs of Japanese suburbs happen to look exactly like on a cloudy afternoon. The second is the subject matter. The standard Japanese apartment block is already a stack of rectangles with a grid of identical windows, so a medium made of cubes is not fighting the source material at all. Almost everyone who worked out what they were looking at reports the same moment of failure — their eye slid off the buildings, hit the pedestrian overpass, and the stairs gave it away.

The builder behind it runs a long-running city project with its own server, and used the attention to announce that the server would be opening to the public.
