Daikin Donated Air Conditioners to a Museum Tea House — and Designed Them to Match the Room

A donation to Tokyo National Museum's tea houses comes with air conditioner panels styled after traditional Japanese lacquer inlay.

Daikin Donated Air Conditioners to a Museum Tea House — and Designed Them to Match the Room

What's going on

The Tokyo National Museum's garden holds two traditional tea houses, Kyūjōkan and Yōkokan, both still used for tea ceremony, with Yōkokan currently home to a small tea café open to visitors. Until recently, neither building had air conditioning, which made hosting guests through Tokyo's brutal summers and chilly winters a real challenge.

Appliance maker Daikin stepped in to donate units for both rooms — but what caught people's attention wasn't the donation itself, it was the execution. Instead of the plain white boxes you'd expect, Daikin fitted the tea houses with units from its higher-end design line, finished with panels styled after traditional Japanese lacquer inlay, so the machines blend into the room instead of sticking out of it.

Photos of the finished rooms started circulating, and people had a lot to say about just how good the units looked.

[We’ve received air conditioners for Kyūjōkan and Yōkokan!] Daikin Industries kindly donated air conditioners for our garden tea houses, Kyūjōkan and Yōkokan. We’re deeply grateful for their generosity and will make good use of them. Thanks to this donation, visitors can now enjoy these tea houses in comfort year-round, without the summer heat or winter cold getting in the way. Yōkokan is currently home to the TOHAKU Tea House. We hope guests can enjoy a more comfortable time while taking in the spirit of Japanese culture and tea. We’ll continue using this kind of support to improve the visitor experience and carry Japanese culture forward.

This air conditioner is seriously cool 🫨 Daikin stock just went up in my personal rankings ☝️
Is this air conditioner not way too cool?!?!?!?!
This air conditioner is so cool!!!!! It’s like the Nihongō (a legendary ornate spear, one of Japan’s most treasured historical weapons) (^◇^)♡♡
This is so nice 😆
What a stylish air conditioner…!
Something about this air conditioner… it’s actually cool 😳 Custom exteriors might be worth considering more often
Oh, this air conditioner is nice ( ゚ω゚)
Wonderful. It’s like a piece of art that owns the room.
I like the idea of showing the air conditioner off instead of hiding it
That’s the raden (mother-of-pearl inlay, a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique) finish from Daikin’s ART Line (their premium design-focused product line). It doesn’t feel heavy even mounted up near the ceiling — maybe because you recognize it as traditional craft at a glance. It fits the tea house perfectly.
Is this a Daikin air conditioner? I looked it up and there’s raden, Red Fuji (a nod to Hokusai’s famous ukiyo-e print of Mount Fuji), wood grain, stone, tweed, mortar, plaster… it’s wild! Is this what they’re doing now? Next time I buy one I want to pick from this lineup!
The raden-design air conditioner is way too cool 😭 I want this for my yellowed old aircon too 😭😭😭
Wait, is that raden on an air conditioner⁉️😮 Is it real⁉️⁉️
Wo-wow, what a stylish air conditioner! Raden-style?
A raden-inlay air conditioner… never seen one before.
The raden-style air conditioner is beautiful. Looked it up — it’s a special design panel from Daikin’s Art Line brand.
Wait, the national museum didn’t even have air conditioning? Then I saw the photo — a raden-inlay pattern! Too beautiful, too much taste…!
Is that a raden air conditioner?? Or just raden-style? Either way, lovely…
Raden work that plays off the room’s atmosphere? Or raden-style? Wonderful.
Wait, isn’t there raden on the surface panel…? (voice shaking)
Oh wow, so there’s an exterior design that actually suits a tea house like this.
Nice… the air conditioner is so stylish (´◒`) It’s got a Japanese feel but also a subtle gorgeousness, so cute 😍
Instead of the usual ivory-colored body, they went with a panel that matches the room’s color scheme 👀
Such an elegant air conditioner, it suits the tea house perfectly ✨ Daikin’s craftsmanship and generosity are wonderful. It’s a national museum, so it’s the public’s property — it’s a bit disappointing the government hadn’t even put in air conditioning.
A lacquerware-style air conditioner. First time seeing one, but it looks like it’d go well with a Japanese-style room.
The air conditioner has that raden-like flair too, blending right into the Japanese room 😊
The design is great, but the fact that they donated it at all is just as impressive. Air conditioning is essential for humidity and temperature control — this really shows Daikin living up to its reputation.
Daikin donated air conditioners to TOHAKU!!!!! Kind of scary to think what they were doing before this, but the raden-style design is so cool!! Is this custom-made? It’s custom-made, right?

My take

Not just donating air conditioners, but actually designing them to fit the room — now that's a classy move.
