Selecting 'Dash' as a Movement Option for the First Time Since High School

An adult rediscovers running, and everyone immediately starts comparing its stamina cost and fuel efficiency.

What's going on

Somewhere between school and adulthood, most people quietly stop running. It isn't a decision anyone makes — the option just falls out of use, until walking is the only way of getting anywhere. One person recently tried the other thing again, by their own estimate for the first time since high school, and came back to report that it worked surprisingly well.

What makes the thread is the vocabulary. Japanese internet writing has borrowed the language of video games to describe ordinary life for years now: you select a movement method, you consume stamina, an action has good or bad fuel efficiency, and unwanted side effects arrive as debuffs. Nobody sets the frame up or explains the joke. Everyone simply talks that way, and the replies slide into it within seconds.

So what follows reads less like a conversation about exercise and more like a group of players comparing notes on an ability they all still have and stopped equipping years ago. The hazards get catalogued, alternative movement techniques get proposed, and eventually the veterans show up to warn everyone about what happens when you use the command without preparation.

Comments

Tried picking “dash” as a movement method for the first time since maybe high school, and this might be seriously convenient.
For real. I dashed the other day and was surprised how fast it was.
You somehow arrive earlier than usual.
I get this. I hate running so I’ve filed it under last resort, but if I run even a little on a route I normally walk, the trip is over so fast it startles me.
I have no memory of dashing since becoming an adult, but now that I think about it again, dash might be the strongest movement option there is.
Yeah, “walk” had become my only remaining option too.
The great invention of the wheel.

The Japanese here is a one-character edit of 車輪の再発明 — reinventing the wheel, used the same way English uses it, for redoing work that was solved long ago. Swapping 再 (re-) for 大 (great) turns the jab into a compliment: not pointless duplication, just a very good invention that happens to be extremely old.

I’ve been picking “dash” for travel lately too. Use it too long and you take the sweat debuff, but the time saved cuts down a lot of stress. Also, if you’re still inside the agreed meetup time but the other person got there first, dashing makes the conversation event branch randomly.
Right, and dashing is fun on top of that.
Is it (B), or is it (R2)… (In Mario you hold B to run; on a PlayStation controller, sprint is usually R2.)
Fuel efficiency is way too bad. Emergencies only.
The stamina cost is pointlessly huge, I don’t want to.
Running on unlimited stamina, probably throwing in pointless jumps on the stairs too.
Might be a bit too fast.
Could be a pipe down to the underground room. (Super Mario Bros. — running into a green pipe drops you into a hidden coin room.)
And you might fall in a hole.
Plus you’d slam straight into a turtle.
love this
すき
Did exactly this a minute ago (sweating buckets)
Gonna pass at this time of year lol (Japanese summers are hot and humid enough that walking is already a workout.)
I recommend skipping.
In a game called Earth Defense Force, rolling had higher movement than dashing, so I just rolled everywhere constantly. (A long-running Japanese co-op shooter series about fighting giant insects.)
Mashing roll is faster.
Comes with next-day recoil, though.
The thing about adult dashing is you haven’t noticed your body doesn’t move like it used to, so you just suddenly go down. Be careful out there.
When I dashed for the first time in ages after turning 30, I wiped out spectacularly and spent a solid minute lying there looking at the sky. Take care out there… (you’re still young so you’re probably fine) (that was the one line I never wanted to say ←)
Once you hit your 40s it disappears from the command list.

My take

Did the command go unused because you leveled up, or did it stop working because you leveled down?
