Autumn Begins When the Steamed Buns Come Back

One person apologized for keeping a fat person's almanac. Everyone else immediately produced their own.

What's going on

Japanese literature has a formal system for keeping track of the seasons. A saijiki is an almanac of seasonal words — kigo — that poets draw on when writing haiku, with every entry filed under spring, summer, autumn or winter. Cherry blossoms are spring. Pacific saury is autumn. The categories are old, codified, and taken reasonably seriously.

So when one person announced that convenience stores had started stocking steamed pork buns again and that autumn had therefore begun, they filed it under a fat person's almanac and apologized for it. The joke works because it isn't entirely a joke. The chains do rotate their hot-food counters on a fixed annual schedule — buns in late summer, oden stew a month or so later — and that schedule tracks the calendar far more reliably than the weather does, which in Japan is still somewhere around 35°C at the beginning of September.

What followed wasn't a pile-on so much as a survey. Everyone had their own version: the beer aisle, the cake shop window, the free coffee at Kaldi switching from iced to hot. A folk almanac, assembled in an afternoon.

Comments

Genuinely sorry that this is a fat person’s almanac, but convenience stores have started carrying steamed buns, so as far as the calendar goes, we’re at the entrance to autumn.
I figured the replies would turn into the usual meme pile-up, but instead everyone told me the exact moment they feel autumn arrive. lol Good Internet.

❌ a fat person’s almanac → ⭕️ finely attuned to the turning of the seasons
‘A fat person’s almanac’ is too beautiful a piece of Japanese.
The Fat Person’s Almanac: Autumn ← I want this to be a real show so badly (NHK is Japan’s public broadcaster, and it does in fact run slow, gentle seasonal programming like this.)

Well, it is a seasonal word. Steamed buns, I mean…
As of this moment I hereby designate ‘convenience store steamed buns’ an autumn seasonal word.
Actually this read is correct from a convenience store marketing standpoint too. The routine at the chains is to start steamed buns around the end of August when the perceived temperature begins dropping, and to start oden around the beginning of October. (Oden is a stew of fishcakes, daikon and boiled eggs simmered in broth, sold from a heated counter at the register through the cold months.)
At the convenience store where I used to work the rule was basically to start on the day of the Nagaoka fireworks, so this is legit. (The Nagaoka festival in Niigata holds one of the country’s largest fireworks displays, in early August.)
It’s about time the tsukimi burger and steamed buns got listed under summer or autumn in the almanac. (The tsukimi, or moon-viewing, burger is a fried-egg burger that fast food chains sell only in early autumn.)

Completely agree. The shirokuma vanished from 7-Eleven and the tsukimi announcement showed up from McDonald’s. (Shirokuma is shaved ice with condensed milk and fruit, a summer fixture.)
Anno sweet potato starts on September 1st, so that’s when it feels like autumn to me. I run on the Veloce almanac. (Veloce is a cheap coffee chain; anno imo is an unusually sweet variety of sweet potato from Kagoshima.)

In the drinker’s almanac, once the autumn pear and apple canned chuhai and the seasonal canned beers appear, the calendar says autumn. (Chuhai is a canned shochu highball, sold in a lineup of fruit flavors that rotates with the seasons.)

Speaking as a dessert-loving fat person, I would like to share that the cake shop I follow has gone entirely grape across its whole lineup. The faster ones already have sweet potato as well.
Also sanma. Still hot out, but it’s autumn. (Sanma, Pacific saury, is the classic autumn fish and a seasonal word in its own right.)
In a windowless mahjong parlor, you learn that dawn has broken because the breakfast service gets carried in. When it’s tonjiru, you’re at the entrance to autumn. (Tonjiru is a heavy miso soup with pork and root vegetables, eaten in the colder months.)

Feels like this person considers the Gracoro a winter seasonal word (and honestly, that tracks) (The Gracoro is McDonald’s macaroni-gratin croquette burger, sold only in winter.)
Winter is oden, summer is halo-halo, and spring is… what, dango? (Halo-halo is the shaved ice dessert Ministop sells every summer; dango are skewered rice dumplings associated with cherry blossom season.)

Feel this way too hard lol, lost it. For summer the cue is the arrival of the extra-chocolate-seed version of the Suika Bar, yeah, I get it.

The ramen shops are cutting back on the chilled and dipping noodle specials and the burger places have started on the tsukimi, so there’s already an early-autumn air to it.

And then before you know it they start carrying oden. Oh no, the year is going to end.
Oden starts from the middle of September, so at that point winter has arrived.
Oden is the signal for winter?! I want to eat enough shirataki to drown in it!!! Something to look forward to 🫶🏼️💕️ (Shirataki are chewy translucent noodles made from konjac, a standard oden ingredient.)

I want writing like this to survive a million years. People then should get to read it the same way we read the Tsurezuregusa or the Tosa Diary. (Both are classical Japanese works, roughly a thousand and seven hundred years old respectively, still assigned in school today.)

Helpful. Please also let me know when the oden starts.
Passing through to ask: whose steamed buns do you like? Nobody asked me but I’m a FamilyMart person.
FamilyMart buns are good, right! I’m almost exclusively FamilyMart too. I love that they keep developing limited-run flavors with pretty adventurous concepts.

Steamed buns in this awful heat?! Oh… a taco bun? Guess I’ll try it… and when I got to the register the clerk told me they hadn’t expected any to sell and I was the first customer to buy one lol

My take

The temperature has dropped a little and there's a hint of autumn in the air — though lately the lingering heat tends to go straight into winter, so a hint is all autumn ever amounts to.
